Background

The Inochi Forum serves as a platform to facilitate inclusive dialogue among diverse stakeholders—from academia, government, industry, and civil society, both in Japan and abroad—on critical issues and actions necessary to achieve the SDGs by 2030. It further seeks to explore the vision for a post-2030 society and to present this vision to the international community in the form of thea “Inochi Declaration”, which would be adopted to wrap -up Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

Through boundary-spanning discussions on the meaning of “life,” what it means to “shine” as a society, and what must be done to “leave no one behind,” the Forum aims to identify key perspectives both for realizing the current SDGs and for setting goals beyond them.

On the occasion of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), this thematicside event will explore Africa’s development challenges and aspirations for its future society. The insights generated will be reflected in the above “Inochi Declaration” and contribute meaningfully to global dialogues on the post-SDGs agenda *“Inochi” is a Japanese word which refers to the existence and activities of living things. It means not just staying alive, but also the special value and respect that all living things naturally have.
