Background

  • Mineral resources development is one of the most effective means for developing countries to develop their industries. The effect of mineral resources development has a great impact on the society and economy of the countries concerned. It often comes with infrastructure development and regional development. And it also contributes to developing human resources, such as engineers and technicians, in various fields related to the mineral industry.
  • Existence of Mineral resources are geologically unevenly distributed between countries, and their stable supply is an international issue. In recent years, the advancement of technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs) has particularly increased the demand for certain mineral resources. From this perspective, the importance of Africa, which possesses a diverse range of mineral resources, is growing.
  • Africa plays a crucial role in the global mining sector due to its vast and diverse mineral resources. To support mining sector in developing country, JICA started KIZUNA Program (Human Resources Development in the Mining Sector) in 2014 and has been accepted more than 200 participants in Japanese Universities. By utilizing network with ex-participants of KIZUNA Program, JICA formulate further collaboration projects with African countries.
