Background
Since the first Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) was signed between AUDA-NEPAD and JICA in 2014, the partnership between the two organizations have been evolving, and collaboration areas have been expanded over years. Currently, with five advisors sent from JICA to AUDA-NEPAD, both organizations have jointly been promoting Africa’s development especially in five collaboration areas such as (1) regional integration, (2) Africa Kaizen Initiative (AKI), (3) Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa (IFNA), (4) Home Grown Solutions (HGS) Accelerator, and (5) research. Those five collaboration areas have been implemented based on the Agenda 2063, and associated plan such as the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan (STYIP, 2024-2033), respecting Africa’s ownership.
Last year marked 10-year anniversary of cooperation between AUDA-NEPAD and JICA, and the collaboration achievement, including TICAD 30-year anniversary and joint publications, were widely showcased in various occasions. In addition, the MOC period has been extended for a year until 2025.
To commemorate TICAD9, the renewed MOC will be signed in today’s event. As areas of cooperation, the existing five cooperation areas will be evolved and extended with 13 sub-themes; (1) the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), (2) trade facilitation (OSBP), (3) power/energy and (4)digitalisation for the area of regional integration, (5) Africa Kaizen Initiative (AKI), (6) African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for the area of industrialisation, and (7) Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Kampala implementation and (8) blue economy for the area of food and nutrition. Furthermore, (9) Home Grown Solutions (HGS) Accelerator Programme and (10) research would remain and strengthened as an cooperation area and approach. (11) Co-creation with ASEAN would be added as a new approach, in addition to the (12) environmental management including Africa Clean City Platform (ACCP) and (13) primary education.
With those expanded areas of collaboration, JICA and AUDA-NEPAD will further strengthen partnership towards the next TICAD in alignment with the AUDA-NEPAD Strategy 2025-2029. To extend the MOC, a commemorative signing ceremony of 5th MOC between JICA and AUDA-NEPAD would be held, as well as a symposium entitled "Japan-Africa Co-Creation for Agenda 2063" will be co-organized to demonstrate 10-year achievements and prospects of cooperation.
