Background

The Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa (IFNA) was jointly established by AUDA-NEPAD and JICA as a 10-year initiative launched at TICAD VI in 2016 to accelerate the implementation of the Malabo Declaration and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). IFNA has promoted various efforts across African countries to improve nutrition by the formulation of nutrition strategies, capacity buildings for government officials, and multisectoral field interventions, such as kitchen gardens, improving complementary feeding, and raising awareness of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Given that IFNA will complete its 10-year period in 2025, it is expected to review its achievements over the decade, identify effective intervention approaches based on case studies, and consider the directions various actors should take to advance nutrition mainstreaming in the future.

Key Questions

  • IFNA (Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa)
  • SDGs
  • Nutrient-focused Food Access Improvement (NFA) Approach and Multisectoral Coordination (MSC) Approach
  • Food and Nutrition Security
  • Malabo Declaration

Objective

This side event will celebrate and share on IFNA’s 10 years of practice in the context of current international trends on nutrition, highlighting several approaches that have achieved significant results. These include the Nutrient-focused Food Access Improvement (NFA) Approach (approaches to fill nutrient gaps through improving food access), Multisectoral collaboration (MSC) Approach at both national and field levels, among others. By reflecting on these achievements, the event will explore effective methods within food systems to improve nutrition and consider how to follow up on IFNA’s outcomes in collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD and other partners, thereby contributing to the improvement of food and nutrition security.
