Background
- In today's international society, we are facing complex crises, and "division" is becoming apparent in various forms. Even within Japan, there is a growing indifference towards international cooperation. In such a situation, it is more important than ever to overcome differences in values and conflicts of interest to cooperate in safeguarding human security.
- At the root of division and indifference lies an unconscious barrier against "those who are different from us or distant from us." Therefore, JICA aims to build a relationship of mutual learning between Africa and Japan, using culture as a starting point, through the "Africa and Culture" Series. This event focuses on the power of music to transcend language, deepen understanding between different cultures, and foster empathy.
Key Questions
- How do roots music and folk songs contribute to understanding others and discovering commonalities?
- What can we learn from examples of women's empowerment through music?
- What role does music play in international cooperation in Africa, and how can it connect people?
Objective
In this event, we will welcome guests such as Peter Barakan, who has extensive knowledge of roots music, as well as individuals who are actively promoting African music in Japan and supporting music education for girls in Africa. The event aims to explore new possibilities for international cooperation and community engagement by highlighting the role of music in empowering women, promoting their participation in society, and fostering social inclusion. This will provide a platform for participants to explore these possibilities together.
