Background

JICA, an organization supporting disability and development, which aims for a world where everyone can live with dignity and be true to themselves and HERALBONY, a company that brings the art of creators with disabilities into the business world, have been expanding their co-creation project since 2024. Through exchange of views during the field visit to Ethiopia and Ghana, it is recognized that art has the potential to be the most powerful form of awareness-raising to value the differences. To achieve the goals of SDGs, leave no one behind, we should further strengthen efforts for promoting “Disability Mainstreaming” and “Disability and Development” with the power of art.

Key Questions

  • What are the success stories and challenges in mainstreaming "Disability and Development" and “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” in Africa and Japan?
  • How can art offer potential solutions to overcome these challenges?
  • In what ways can collaborations between organizations like JICA, HERALBONY, and the ADF enhance the visibility and opportunities for persons with disabilities in developing countries, particularly in Africa?

Objective

We aim to communicate how art enables social participation for people with diverse backgrounds, including those with disabilities and social minorities. At the same time, we will broadly share JICA's efforts in the field of "Disability and Development". In collaboration with HERALBONY and Africa Disability Forum (ADF), this event will be a unique opportunity to discover artists with disabilities from Africa and Japan, and to showcase the commitment to embracing diversity in developing countries, particularly in Africa.
